Short Abstract

Cross-linguistically, ideas such as obligation can be expressed diversely, and the forms of expression are subject to diachronic change. Historically, the Spanish phrase “haber que + infinitive” expressed necessity of action/obligation. Today, however, that usage has been replaced by “tener que + infinitive,” and "haber que" occurs only in participial phrases. This study traces this shift using the corpus of the Real Academia Espanola. It shows that the shift was gradual and suggests time periods for the overlapping phases
