Description
The need for extensive reforms in elementary school science is well known. Some educators have suggested that the employment of elementary school science specialists would eliminate most problems. This may not be an economically feasible option for many schools; especially those in rural and small districts, in the current era of budgetary stress. But this is an issue that cannot be ignored, and most of the nation's elementary schools need help if their students are to receive the scientific backgrounds needed for success in high school and college science studies. This report describes an effective alternative that has helped many elementary schools help themselves. The key to success was the central involvement of the school principal as a coequal with teachers in a program of local leadership and science content enrichment through inservice education.
