Description
The possible mutagenic activity of twney-five cosmetic ingredients was investigated using the Salmonella histidine auxotrophs hisTA98, hisTA100, hisTA1535, hisTA1537 and hisTA1538. All twenty-five cosmetic ingredients were subjected to the spot test, a qualitative form of the Salmonella/microsome test. Nine of the twenty-five cosmetic ingredients demonstrated potential mutagenicity in the spot testing and were further examined in plate incorporation tests, a quantitative form of the Salmonella/microsome test. Only one tested cosmetic ingredient, DEA Laureth Sulfate, gave positive mutagenic results in the plate incorporation test.
