Description
Literature on the function of education and learning in change supports a need to examine the change process, the role of learning in the change and the roles of formal continuing medical education (CME) and other information sources in learning in the lives of physicians. The purpose of this study is to explore and describe these processes and functions as they relate to both medical practice and life patterns of physicians in the United States and Canada. The study will use in‐depth interviews with between 300 and 400 randomly selected physicians from the United States and Canada. interviews will be conducted by volunteers from the membership of the Society of Medical College Directors of Continuing Medical Education (SMCDCME). The interview instrument was developed as a result of pilot studies conducted by members of the project staff and Research Committee of the SMCDCME. The interview uses probing techniques and emphasizes in‐depth exploration. Data analysis will be based upon the principles of naturalistic inquiry and grounded theory as articulated by Glaser and Strauss (1967). It is expected that approximately two years will be required for data collection and analysis. The project is formally sponsored by the Society of Medical College Directors of Continuing Medical Education.
