Description
A sample of 200 schizophrenics and 225 primary affective disorders was selected on the basis of rigid diagnostic criteria, from hospital records. An attempt was made to find associations between precipitating factors, diagnostic groups, and certain patient and clinical characteristics. Our findings indicate that precipitating events can be found in 35% of primary affective disorders and 11% of schizophrenics. There is a trend for precipitants to be seen most frequently in unipolar affective disorder and least frequently in schizophrenia, bipolar affective disorders falling in between. Precipitating events, however, seem to have little relationship to personal or social characteristics of patients or to the clinical picture of the diseases studied.
