Description

Patients with eating disorders have distorted feeding rituals and idiosyncracies. Numerous physiological changes and medical complications have been observed in this population, varying with type and extent of physiologic insult. Nine compulsive overeaters, two bulimics and four control group subjects completed the study. Control group subjects were age, height, sex, parity, and ethnicity matched. Demographic and nutritional data were collected on each subject. Experimental group subjects were provided with progressive individual counselling using the Food Guide Pyramid (FGP) as an education tool. Bioelectric Impedance (BIA) was used as a monitoring tool in bulimics and compulsive overeaters during nutritional rehabilitation. Food records were reviewed, and analyzed using Nutritionist III. BIA was conducted for ten measures, using two softwares (Body Composition II and Weight Manager). Although no significant changes in nutrient intake were observed in either group, a caloric decrease was observed in experimental group subjects (bulimics 2327.50 vs 1280.0; compulsive overeaters 2177.33 vs 1437.13). A non significant increase in caloric intake observed in the control group (1789.75 vs 2079.75). Both BIA programs demonstrated significant differences in body composition estimation. Estimations with Weight Manager1 were more detailed and accurate. Subjects exhibited great acceptance of FGP and ease in comprehending and retaining concepts of nutritional requirements. Observations from this study lead to the conclusions that FGP can be effectively used as a nutrition education tool in diverse populations. BIA can be reliably used as a monitoring tool of changing body composition. Further investigations with larger populations will be directed to assess validity and reliability of BIA estimation of body composition during nutritional rehabilitation.
