Description
Experimenters examined the effect of tangible and social reinforcers on language development of a profoundly retarded adult male. Grunting behavior emitted by the subject was treated through extinction. Both tangible and social reinforcers increased word usage by subject. Ignoring grunting while rewarding appropriate word usage was found to be effective in extinguishing grunting behavior. An ABAC behavioral design was used to analyze treatment effect.
