Description
Over the past few years there has been expanded interest in highly-complex, highly-nonlinear, and sometimes ill-defined problems ranging from signal processing and pattern recognition to control theory and finance. Classical methods have proven of little use in the solutions of these problems, but there has been an explosion of successful intelligent methods including artificial neural networks (ANNs). As ANN methods increase, engineering technology programs will eventually need to incorporate ANNs into their inventory of subjects. This paper discusses some simple artificial neural networks that have been used in the classroom to introduce the concepts of ANNs, specifically the perceptron and backpropagation networks.
