Description
Surveyors' skills are being applied to new positional dilemmas. Laws governing solar access vary greatly. One approach is to modified zoning restrictions through the use of solar envelopes. A computer program, has been developed which defines solar envelopes through typical field data such as parcel boundaries, topography, longitude, and latitude. The output gives a subdivision designer height limits for the entire parcel on a regular grid. If the improvements and vegetation do not exceed these limits, then neighboring solar access is preserved. Surveyors need to be involved in wording access regulations to improve accuracy and ease of location. -Author
