Abstract
A discussion of works shown in Beast of Burdens, a Master of Fine Arts exhibition held at the Slocumb Gallery from March 23rd, 2026, to April 3rd, 2026. The exhibition includes paintings, leather objects, and installation works that evaluate unconscious power dynamics influencing the perception of gender, sex, and sexuality.
The artist discusses the theoretical frameworks of the exhibition. Ideas explored include second and third-wave feminist theory, studio practice, intersectionality, unconscious desire, psychoanalytic theory, fetish, kink, BDSM, fringe cultural groups, utilitarianism, leatherworking, color theory, and animal behavior. Colleen Barry, REX, Tom of Finland, Leonora Carrington, Paula Rego, and other historical and contemporary artists are also discussed.
