Call for Abstracts

 Abstract Directions

  1. The body of the abstract is limited to 250 words in total.
  2. Choose either a research abstract or QI/Process Improvement project abstract or a Scientific Abstract (Literature Review Format) for each unique abstract.
  3. Please upload abstract to Digital Commons@ETSU by March 31, 2024.
  4. A blind review will be used to score the abstracts based on this rubric.

Your abstract should include the following sections (in bold):

Research Abstract

Purpose: A brief statement of the nature of the investigation or purpose of the study.
Aims: The overall purpose, research question, or study hypothesis.
Methods: The study design and methods (sample, procedures, measures, and/or data analysis). Please note that the study can use qualitative or quantitative methods. Include IRB review.
Results: The study findings. Limitations: factors such as method, methodology, research design, that impact findings and conclusions of the study.
Conclusions: The overall impact of findings and relevance to nursing, healthcare, or health policy.

Quality Improvement/Process Improvement Project Abstract

Purpose: A brief statement of the type and focus of project Authors: All authors and affiliations.
Aims: The overall purpose of the project
Processes: Describe steps in the processes used in a QI/Program Implementation or Program Evaluation project. Include as appropriate, sample and target population, procedures, measures, and/or data analysis. Include IRB determination.
Results: Results of the project findings or products.
Limitations: Factors such as environmental barriers, personnel issues, sample size, that impact findings and conclusions.
Conclusions: The overall impact of findings and relevance to nursing, healthcare, or health policy.

Scientific Abstract (Literature Review Format for students in NRSE 3525)

Introduction & Background: Identify the problem, define the problem, note the context surrounding the problem.
Purpose Statement Question: Note the purpose of your research and question driving your literature review. Refer to page 390 to understand how to build a question using the PICO format (P-population or participants of interest in your clinical setting, I-intervention needed for practice, C-comparisons of interventions to determine the best intervention for your practice, and O-outcomes needed for practice and ways to measure the outcomes in your practice) (Grove & Gray, 2019, p. 390).
Literature Review: search methods, data bases searched, key search words/terms, number of studies, inclusion and exclusion criteria, as examples.
Findings: key findings from a review of the literature.
Conclusions: take-home message, applied nursing implications, group perspective, may include limitations and gaps in the literature, as example (Andrade, 2011)

Review Rubric

Reviewers will be using a review rubric to determine what abstracts will be accepted. While writing your abstract, you may want to consult the review rubric to ensure it will receive high marks.

Abstract Acceptance

If your abstract is accepted, please review the directions:

  1. If your abstract is selected, you will need to submit/upload your Power Point presentation or poster presentation to Digital Commons by March 15, 2024.
  2. Poster instructions: Poster size 36 X 48 inches
  3. Include references either, 1) on the poster, 2) separate word doc, or 3) QR code on the poster.
