Short Abstract

Through the theoretical framework of Relational Dialectics Theory, this thesis explores the competing discourses among adult, Asian adoptees surrounding the conversation of race. A single dialectical tension was identified, highlighting the Asian adoptee’s role in maintaining conversations of race with their White, adoptive parents. Some adoptees felt responsible for having these conversations, while others resisted being the spokesperson for race in their families.
