Short Abstract

This study used two rhetorical analyses of four popular films featuring Black fathers to unveil how these movies inadvertently support Black fatherhood stereotypes, despite being created to subvert them. A subsequent survey inquired adult children of Black fathers about their perceptions of these stigmas. Participants acknowledged societal stereotypes of Black fathers but generally did not believe them to be true of their own fathers. This study unveiled a significant association between these stigmas and participants' desires to become quality parents.
