Abstract
This project was a symposium hosted by the Appalachian Opportunity Fund entitled
“Building Community Wealth Through Employee Ownership” at the Langston Centre in Johnson City, Tennessee on September 19th, 2024. The symposium featured speakers from the Employee Ownership Expansion Network, the Tennessee Center for Employee Ownership, the Industrial Commons, the Appalachian Producers Cooperative, and State of Franklin Healthcare Associates. The purpose of the symposium was to introduce the concept of community wealth building, employee ownership and cooperative enterprise to community economic development leaders and professionals in the Northeast Tennessee area. This paper discusses this event, the specific economic conditions of the Johnson City/Northeast Tennessee area, and the broader literature on community wealth building and the “just [economic] transition” in Central Appalachia that inspired this event.
