Introductory Calculus for the Natural Sciences
Michel Helfgott and Darrell Moore
This textbook is intended for first-year college students in biology, chemistry, or physics. Its most distinctive feature is the central role played by applications to the natural sciences. Considering that nowadays students have access to graphing calculators that can solve complicated integrals, little or no space has been devoted in the book to integrals that require subtle changes of variables. Rather, we choose to concentrate on the basic techniques of integration and stress the solution of applied problems, especially those that use real data. We envision a calculus course where students not only learn to calculate derivatives or solve integrals, but are also able to discuss the validity of a model and estimate parameters.

Varieties of Tone: Frege, Dummett and the Shades of Meaning
Richard D. Kortum
In clear and lively prose that avoids jargon, the author carefully and systematically examines the many kinds of subtly nuanced words or word-pairs of everyday discourse such as 'and'-'but', 'before'-'ere', 'Chinese'-'Chink', and 'sweat'-'perspiration', that have proven resistant to truth-conditional explanations of meaning.

Teaching to Standards: English Language Arts
Pamela J. Mims, Angel Lee, Tracie-Lynn Zakas, Diane M. Browder, and L. Bastian
Research demonstrates high effectiveness with teaching skills that align to grade-level standards.
This curriculum provides materials at three literacy levels: object/photo, symbols, and text. Skill areas include persuasive writing, elements of story grammar, and research endeavors. The authors adapted 15 popular works (like Holes, Number the Stars, and Dragonwings) into simplified text with repeated story lines and symbol supports. Genres include fiction, nonfiction, plays, and poetry.
The 32 progressive lessons are scripted and incorporate evidencebased teaching procedures. They are organized into four units: Change, Values and Decision Making, Social Justice, and Global Awareness. These themes help students grasp the big ideas as well as specific ELA skills.
The curriculum seamlessly integrates traditional formats, like books and manipulatives, with the software and iPad app. This blended approach helps you to teach all students effectively and creates an engaging learning process. In the software and app, students explore eight works of literature through a five-step instructional sequence: preview, vocabulary, read the book, comprehension questions, and story sequence.
The curriculum now comes with two new components, including the consumable Daily Writing Journal Student Workbook and the Task Analysis Teacher Extension Book.
Curriculum Includes: The Implementation Guide, Alignment to Standards booklet, two Teacher’s Guides, one Assessment Response Book, one Student Response Book, Right On Readers 1 and 2, one Daily Writing Journal Student Book, one consumable Daily Writing Journal Student Workbook, graphic organizers, 250 teaching cards, PDFs on disc with a classroom license for printouts, a Task Analysis Teacher Extension Book, and the Access Language Arts Software and iPad App.
Curriculum Plus Includes: the Teaching to Standards: ELA Curriculum plus a total of 10 consumable Daily Writing Journal Student Workbooks, the GoWorksheet Maker iPad App, a set of GoWorksheet activities, samples of communications overlays, four sets of the Right On Readers, and one copy of Holes, We Beat the Street, The Outsiders, Number the Stars, and Dragonwings.

Ted Olson
The Johnson City Sessions were held in Johnson City, Tennessee in October 1928 and October 1929. This work "...marks the first time these recordings have been assembled in any format. Collectively, these 100 songs and tunes are regarded by scholars and record collectors as a strong and distinctive cross-section of old-time Appalachian music just before the Great Depression. The four CDs gather every surviving recording from the sessions, while the accompanying 136-page LP-sized hardcover book contains newly researched essays on the background to the sessions and on the individual artists, with many rare and hitherto unpublished photographs, as well as complete song lyrics and a detailed discography." -- Back cover.
Ted Olson (East Tennessee State University) and Tony Russell are the re-issue producers.

He analyzes this ancient art in clear, precise, engaging prose while dispensing acute, methodical and perceptive advice. Becoming Melungeon: Making an Ethnic Identity in the Appalachian South
Melissa Schrift
Appalachian legend describes a mysterious, multiethnic population of exotic, dark-skinned rogues called Melungeons who rejected the outside world and lived in the remote, rugged mountains in thefarthest corner of northeast Tennessee. The allegedly unknown origins of these Melungeons are part of what drove this legend and generated myriad exotic origin theories. Though nobody self-identified asMelungeon before the 1960s, by the 1990s "Melungeonness" had become a full-fledged cultural phenomenon, resulting in a zealous online community and annual meetings where self-identified Melungeons gathered to discuss shared genealogy and history. Although today Melungeons are commonly identified as the descendants of underclass whites, freed African Americans, and Native Americans, this ethnic identity is still largely a social construction based on local tradition, myth, and media.
In Becoming Melungeon, Melissa Schrift examines the ways in which the Melungeon ethnicidentity has been socially constructed over time by various regional and national media, plays, and other forms of popular culture. Schrift explores how the social construction of this legend evolved into a fervent movement of a self-identified ethnicity in the 1990s. This illuminating and insightful work examines these shifting social constructions of race, ethnicity, and identity both in the local context of the Melungeons and more broadly in an attempt to understand the formation of ethnic groups and identity in the modern world."

This Distracted and Anarchical People: New Answers For Old Questions About The Civil War-Era North
Andrew L. Slap
While most of the fighting took place in the South, the Civil War profoundly affected the North. As farm boys became soldiers and marched off to battle, social, economic, and political changes transformed northern society. In the generations following the conflict, historians tried to understand and explain the North's Civil War experience. Many historical explanations became taken for granted, such as that the Union Army was ideologically Republican, northern Democrats were disloyal, and German Americans were lousy soldiers. Now in this eye-opening collection of eleven stimulating essays, new and important information is unearthed that solidly challenges the old historical arguments. The essays in This Distracted and Anarchical People range widely throughout the history of the Civil War North, using new methods and sources to reexamine old theories and discover new aspects of the nation's greatest conflict. Many of these issues are just as important today as they were a century and a half ago. What were the extent and limits of wartime dissent in the North? How could a president most effectively present himself to the public? Can the savagery of war ever be tamed? How did African Americans create and maintain their families? This Distracted and Anarchical People highlights the newest scholarship on a diverse array of topics, bringing fresh insight to bear on some of the most important topics in history today--such as the democratic press in the antebellum North, peace movements, the Union Army and the elections of 1864, Liberia and the U.S. Civil War, and African American veterans and marriage practices after Emancipation..

The Plays of Samuel Beckett
Katherine Weiss
Beckett remains one of the most important writers of the twentieth century whose radical experimentations in form and content won him the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1969. This Critical Companion encompasses his plays for the stage, radio and television, and will be indispensable to students of his work.
Challenging and at times perplexing, Beckett's work is represented on almost every literature, theatre and Irish studies curriculum in universities in North America, Europe and Australia. Katherine Weiss' admirably clear study of his work provides the perfect companion, illuminating each play and Beckett's vision, and investigating his experiments with the body, voice and technology. It includes in-depth studies of the major works Waiting for Godot, Endgame and Krapp's Last Tape, and as with other volumes in Methuen Drama's Critical Companions series it features too a series of essays by other scholars and practitioners offering different critical perspectives on Beckett in performance that will inform students' own critical thinking. Together with a series of resources including a chronology and a list of further reading, this is ideal for all students and readers of Beckett's work.
