Abstract

East Tennessee State University will host a two-day conference this week aimed at building a more resilient community and creating a recovery ecosystem to help veterans struggling with substance use disorder.

The event, Sparking Resilience: How the Northeast Tennessee Region Can Forge a Recovery Ecosystem for Veterans, takes place from May 25-26 and is hosted by the Quillen College of Medicine’s Department of Continuing Education for Health Professionals. Continuing education credit is being offered.

“This is just the first step in a long journey to start building a more resilient recovery ecosystem for our communities that have been devastated by the opioid epidemic and substance use disorder,” said Dr. Anthony DeLucia, an ETSU professor in the Quillen College of Medicine and event director.

Attendees will hear from a variety of speakers who will share their experiences and expertise in addressing substance use disorder in the region’s veteran population. This includes exploring governmental approaches to address substance use disorder and the role of faith-based treatments in confronting the epidemic.

“What we’re really hoping to do is give people the knowledge and ability to evaluate the impact of substance use disorder on our region’s veterans, and show people the vision for a true recovery ecosystem,” DeLucia said. “Once we get that foundation in place, then we can start moving towards effecting real, significant change in our communities.”
