Abstract

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Nov. 30, 2021) – How do colleges cultivate inclusive environments that both foster equity and celebrate diversity? East Tennessee State University’s Jessica Wang, director for Student Success in the Clemmer College, will explore that question this week in a talk titled “Cultivating Equitable Student Success in Colleges and Universities.” ~[com[2366 1 87{ "version": 68, "data": {"52e399bd72a342a38137a984e26b69cb":"{{f:45665734}}","bdae6b03511ebe1a07fa4efb856724da":"link_multi","e6c30e688cfccf72a0a646cb97b21c7c":"FALSE","942bcb3e8f863bc697e4a4e174665bb9":"","2470315900e9ec6d782d958f93df973b":"Jessica Wang","e91e95e869b95b9bb4686c00648f8402":"","3c1640ef0144b5f4f2fb251dbd381853":"","931587cef6aa10d4307fc1b44e0c4663":"float--right","01dd544f26c7c604d9a1b21e6e28c2b2":"","3806989cc57305955c266c49fcaa9f89":"","a738bc66ad43b00eb425acd81d003907":"","c681aef32a2ca1168b2699009d850a31":"","e62c45574d439984a0ae94a74aeae835":"","33a203068eea3e66fdf436db75faaecc":"","8658afe32b015b453648add1684fef41":"","4683d6cb05b7c28a241d9b1d74afe188":"card--blue","3ef6793ebb188a3c7addcbf53098d992":"","09daf4f3d074f1156df5bf9b2d35b26b":"","849e4e59ee23520e2f3d256e5f0a32f3":"FALSE","cbe4215a41f675d45bbf2bb25e159a71":""}}]]~

Part of the “Women on Wednesdays” lecture series sponsored by the ETSU Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program, the event is free and open to the public. It happens on Zoom (https://etsu.zoom.us/j/98796997075) at noon on Wednesday, Dec. 1.

Wang’s participation in research at Harvard University focused on “fostering historically underrepresented student success at predominantly white institutions of higher education.”

This research led to her creation of CORE goals: cultural competency, organized community, representation and extra resources. In this talk, Wang will use these CORE goals to lead a discussion on how colleges can better support students of color and first-generation students in developing a sense of belonging on campus and persisting to graduation.

Wang earned her master’s degree in higher education from Harvard. Since coming to ETSU, she has developed the STRIVE (Students Teaching and Representing Inclusive Values and Excellence) student of color mentoring program, and she currently serves as member of the Equity and Inclusion Advisory Council. In addition to STRIVE, Wang has also created “Firsts,” a first-generation mentoring program.

The “Women on Wednesdays” series is designed to raise awareness about research, scholarship and community engagement conducted by women at ETSU. In addition, it provides a venue where women on campus and in the community can discuss and support each other’s work, and it gives students an opportunity to meet faculty who could become mentors for their studies.
