Abstract
JOHNSON CITY (June 26, 2020) – The East Tennessee State University Office of Leadership and Civic Engagement and Center for Teaching Excellence are planning virtual film and book discussions in July to help prompt dialogue among the campus community regarding culturally relevant topics.
'Pop-n-Doc' Film Series
The first of these events is the start of a five-part series of “Pop-n-Doc” film discussions to prompt dialogue regarding civic engagement, diversity, justice and the American experience.

The subject for July is “Racial Justice,” and the films are “Just Mercy” (pop) and “True Justice” (doc).
Two cohorts of up to 90 members each will be formed for discussion. Cohort 1 will meet via Zoom Monday and Wednesday, July 6 and 8, at 5:30 p.m., and Cohort 2 will meet Tuesday and Thursday, July 7 and 9, at 11 a.m.
ETSU students, faculty and staff may register to participate in the Pop-n-Doc discussions by July 2 by clicking here. “Just Mercy” is available for free from many streaming platforms through the end of June. “True Justice” is available through the Sherrod Library’s subscription to the film database Kanopy at https://etsu.kanopy.com/product/true-justice.
Book Discussions
In addition, the ETSU community is invited to consider the legacy of racial inequality in the U.S. by reading and discussing Dr. Robin DiAngelo’s book, “White Fragility: Why It’s so Hard for White People to Talk about Racism.” The author asks readers to consider the social environment that protects white people from talking about race and racism, and provides suggestions and tools for improving willingness to discuss and confront issues of race.
Participants are asked to read the book and then join one of two cohorts of up to 60 members each to discuss via Zoom the concepts presented in the text. Cohort 1 will meet Thursdays, July 16 and 30, at 10 a.m., and Cohort 2 will meet Thursdays, July 23 and Aug. 6, at 10 a.m.
