Abstract
N-acylethanolamines (NAEs) are lipid-derived molecules involved in plant growth, development, and stress responses, and their cellular levels are regulated by fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH). This study examined the effects of the FAAH-enhancing NAE analogs pentadecylphenol ethanolamide (Pdp-EA) and cardanol ethanolamide (Cardanol-EA), along with their chiral derivatives, on growth and physiological responses in P. patens. Only Pdp-EA significantly enhanced colony growth and area in the growth and screening experiment for 29 days (p = 0.0014). A follow-up experiment using Pdp-EA alone evaluated colony growth, chloroplast organization, and chlorophyll content. The growth-promoting effect was not reproduced, and no treatment-associated changes in chloroplast organization were observed. Chlorophyll measurements were not interpretable owing to limitations of the extraction procedure. Differences between experiments, including culture age and sampling design, may account for the discrepancy. Further studies under matched conditions are needed to clarify the effects of Pdp-EA in P. patens.
