Abstract
This study investigated what effects static stretching would have when used as a recovery tool between four sets of a novel climbing-specific task known as feet on campusing. It also tried to determine if stretching would have any effect on the participant’s rating of perceived exertion and readiness to climb. Twelve (n=12) climbers were recruited to participate in a randomized counterbalanced crossover study using 3x20s of static stretching and no stretching as conditions, with five minutes for each rest period. Climbers attended three sessions, one for familiarization, two for testing. Repeated measures ANOVAs were used to find differences in feet on campusing time to failure and handgrip strength. No main effects were seen for condition or the interaction effect between condition and timepoints for handgrip strength (p=0.390, p=0.420) and feet on campusing (p=0.956, p=0.820). No notable differences were found for psychological outcomes either. It can be concluded that static stretching in an ecologically valid setting likely does not acutely impair climbing performance or worsen perceived exertion and readiness to climb.
