Short Abstract

This presentation analyzes the narrative role of a well-known Sir Gawain and the Green Knight illustration in the Pearl Manuscript, also known as the Gawain Manuscript. It is thought to be the oldest surviving English manuscript, which includes a full page of written text. The Pearl Manuscript is a unique jewel among the tapestry of medieval manuscripts and marginalia in the 14th century. Incorporating evidence from scholarly journals, written adaptations, and illustrations, this research demonstrates that the illustration conveys meaning in sacrifice, dignity, and protection. As a result, the illustration adapted from Sir Gawain and the Green Knight illustrates heavenly-like visions, creating a nexus between art and literature.
