Short Abstract

Professional Perceptions: Analyzing Perceptions of Interior Design Among Professional Architects and the General Public By Isabelle Justina Cota for the degree of BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE East Tennessee State University College of Business and Technology Department of Interior Architecture The profession of interior design has a long and complex history and exerts a great deal of influence over the daily lives of every individual living today. However, there are numerous misconceptions that surround the profession which have propagated for many decades. The advent of the internet and the development of design television have made information about interior design easier to access, but there has been little research into the current understanding of interior design. The goal of this study was to ascertain the level of understanding concerning interior design held by professional architects as well as members of the general public. Data was collected by conducting two separate surveys, each directed at one of the specific focus groups. These surveys were designed to gauge the respondents’ knowledge of interior design education, law, and practice, as well as their perception of the industry as a whole. The results of this study show that, despite the increasing availability of information and efforts by the profession to dispel the miseducation surrounding the field, there has been little significant development in the understanding of interior design by those outside the profession. This demonstrates a need to reevaluate the methods currently being utilized by the profession to educate the general public and fellow professionals.
