Short Abstract

Leadership and its characteristics are topics that have been thoroughly studied and are of great interest for organizations, businesses, and leaders all over the world. There have been many studies conducted to determine what are leadership characteristics and to define leadership. However, there is limited literature available, practically nonexistent, on the potential effects of political views on what leadership characteristics individuals value. The main motivation of this study is to address an area of leadership research that is currently lacking and has the potential to improve leadership strategies and methods to better fit the environment of the business or organization. This study will research if an individual’s political views dictate what leadership characteristics the individual values. This study began through a through review of the current literature and the collection of research supported leadership characteristics. The study consisted of a convenience sample of the American population by creating a two-part online survey to determine in part one what leadership characteristics the participant values using leadership characteristics found from current studies and in part two what political ideology the participant most identifies with, along with basic demographic information that might affect the results. Once the responses have been collected, the data will be organized into a format that can be analyzed and compared to determine if there is any significant correlation between political views and valued leadership characteristics.
