Short Abstract
There is a consensus in education that sense of belonging refers to students’ feelings of being accepted, included by and connected to their institutions. This belonging is positively related to various aspects of students’ experiences in higher education, such as social and psychological functioning, support and caring, college activities, self-confidence and academic achievement, and social recognition and acceptance. Several studies found that various elements, including a sense of belonging, play a crucial role in student retention. Using a mixed method approach, this project examined the connectedness of undergraduate Communication Studies majors to the Communication Studies and Storytelling Department. Results showed many students transfer into the department. Students reported feeling a lack of direction and noted a lack of social media presence, club/organizations, department activities, or socials. Proposed solutions are then suggested.
