Abstract

ETSU Medical Brigades is an organization of volunteers that travel to rural, underserved populations in Latin America to help address the gap in access to continuous and quality care. Working in collaboration with Global Brigades, a nonprofit organization investing in communities to build sustainable livelihoods and healthier futures, the ETSU Medical Brigade chapter’s efforts operated using a holistic model that aimed to support communities for years to come. For the past three years, Medical Brigades has taken students to Guatemala and Panama, where simply designed healthcare clinics were set up in different communities to provide the residents with medical, dental, pharmaceutical, and educational aid. These clinics provided student volunteers with new experiences within their majors or plans of study, exposing them to a unique learning environment.
