Rebuilding Roots: An Alternative Break Experience
Abstract
This project partnered with Appalachia Service Project (ASP) to promote the rebuilding of local homes as well as respond to Hurricane Helene and the ongoing recovery efforts in the community. Students spent a week painting, assisting in finishing work, landscaping, cleaning debris, and developing relationships with local survivors. Students experienced eye-opening moments when learning about the cultural connection Appalachians have to their rivers and land, culminating the idea of "roots" in Appalachia.
