President's Message

Graduation begins today on the campus of East Tennessee State University. In fact it begins every day at this institution. Each time a student enters a classroom, each time a faculty member holds a study session, each time a staff member meets with a student to discuss financial aid options, each time the lights are turned on in a research lab, each time a student completes an internship or an hour of community service, or boards a plane for a study abroad trip, we move one step closer to realizing the dream of a college degree for our more than 14,500 students. Our graduates are able to open new doors of opportunity and to give back to their communities. They are empowered to be forces of great change. And, they realize that dreams are possible. For more than 100 years, ETSU has been in the business of helping students achieve their dreams. In this edition of ETSU Today, we highlight some of the men and women from our past and present who are themselves achievers of dreams. You will read about people like Dr. Willene Paxton, Dr. Sally Lee, and Dr. Chris Dula, who have dedicated their lives to help students succeed. You will also have the opportunity to meet other people who are making a difference in the lives of people on this campus and in our community. There is Doretha Benn, our 2014-15 Student Government Association President. There is Amanda Worley from our Public Safety staff. And there are the amazing people at our St. Jude Tri-Cities Affiliate clinic who bring hope and cures to the most precious among us. All of us have dreams for this campus. Years ago citizens dreamed of a medical school at ETSU. They dreamed of a pharmacy school. They dreamed big. Later this year we will see other dreams realized as we move forward with our own fine and performing arts center, and as we watch our new football team take the field for its first game in September. And even after these dreams come true, we will continue to dream big so we can ensure that graduation always begins today. Godspeed, and go Bucs! - Brian Noland, President
