President's Message
The leaves have begun to change here on the campus of East Tennessee State University and we are well into the fall semester. Other than commencement, the start of a new academic year is my favorite time of year at ETSU, for it brings a sense of academic renewal as we return to the classroom and our new students begin their academic journeys. Each fall semester, I have the opportunity to welcome new and returning students to the campus, providing them with a few words of wisdom as their ETSU experience begins to take shape. I encourage our students to become active members of the university community and to take advantage of the learning opportunities presented to them. I encourage them to step outside their comfort zones in a way that allows them to learn about and explore diverse perspectives. I encourage them, as well as members of our faculty and staff, to help create an environment that is inclusive, appreciative of different opinions and backgrounds, and culturally transformative. In today’s world, this advice seems equally important outside these campus walls. We all can benefit from stepping outside of our comfort zones to experience life from different perspectives. During the grand opening of our new aerial adventure course at the start of the semester, I embraced my own advice and stepped out of my comfort zone to face my fear of heights head on. As I jumped from a platform 45 feet in the air, I felt downright terrified, but it was also quite liberating. The completion of our aerial adventure course was just one of many landmark happenings to take place over the summer here at ETSU. A significant event in the history of Tennessee higher education occurred this summer as Governor Bill Haslam ceremonially signed the FOCUS Act into law here on our campus. The act authorized the creation of an institutional governing board for our university. In October, Governor Haslam announced the inaugural members of our Board of Trustees. We are thrilled to have these individuals serving as our first institutional governing board, which will hold its first meeting in April 2017. Throughout the fall, we have continued our review of institutional policies and procedures in order to ensure a smooth transition to the new governing structure. This is a period of profound change in higher education across the state, and I look forward to working with our Board of Trustees and to strengthening our mission commitment to serving the needs of the people of our region. With a plethora of activities planned throughout the fall and spring semesters, I hope you are able to find time to make your way back to campus to experience ETSU during this academic year. Thank you for being part of the East Tennessee State University family. Godspeed, and Go Bucs! - Brian Noland, President
