Aims: The purpose of this study was to investigate how concerned women in Appalachia are regarding the environment. The following research question was addressed: What concerns do women have regarding the environment? The objective of this study was to understand how women perceive their environment and to evaluate what concerns they have regarding the environment. We also evaluated demographic factors to see if any demographics contributed to particular concerns related to the environment.
Methods: This study used a qualitative descriptive design. Participants completed one in-depth interview about their environmental concerns followed by a confirmatory interview to ensure main ideas and themes were captured adequately. Interviews were audio recorded with participant permission. Interview transcripts were analyzed for common themes. The IRB approved this research.
Results: Several women expressed concerns about water contamination. Analysis is in progress.
Limitations: Some participants did not have much to say or did not have concerns related to the environment.
Conclusions: Environmental contamination impacts health. Many participants in Appalachia may be unaware of these impacts. The participants in this study expressed a variety of concerns related to the environment and some expressed none. This indicates that education may be needed in current environmental status and the implications of contamination on health.
