Abstract

This study aims to estimate the relative need for, supply of, and priority areas for public health nurses at the county level. A cross-sectional study design was utilized, using national data sources that are available at the county level. Need was estimated through a novel index based on demographic, economic, healthcare, and health outcome information, with supply estimated through local health department registered nurse staffing data. Need and supply varies across the country, with a small correlation between the two. The intersection of these measures were used to identify priority tiers for "deserts" of public health nurses. This research can be used to identify gaps in public health nurse availability and can inform resource allocation to address workforce shortages among nurses in local health departments.
